Narratology vs. Ludology Revision of a Debate (Bachelor Thesis)abstractFull text in German language. In Game Studies, there are two dominant approaches to the topic of narration in video games. Narratology analyses games with the tools of literature and film studies, ludology denies the feasibility of narration within an interactive context. Both approaches fall short, the more so as a clear definition of the medium is still lacking. This paper proposes a definition and examines medial and societal reasons for games to make use of narration in the first place. It also takes a closer look on linearity, non-linearity and interlinearity. Exploration of narrative space, provocation and projection of emotions and game-mechanical statements are introduced as intersections of gameplay and narration. PDF
